Students make a beeline for confidential results

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Chandigarh, July 20: With the Punjab University authorities unable to declare the results of the BA Part III exams held in May so far, students seeking admission to other universities and institutes are a harassed lot, making a beeline for confidential results and running from one official to another to ensure that the results were despatched in time.

Those seeking admission to other universities point out that while the PU has forwarded its dates for admission due to the delay in results, other institutions have not. "At most institutions, admissions have ended or are in the process of completion. But without the results we stand no chance," a student pointed out.

While officials confirm that scores have applied for confidential results, student activists reveal that they were approached by several students today, who stated that their results had not reached the destinations despite the formalities having been completed on time.

The PU authorities point out that the rules do not permit them to hand over the confidential result cards to the candidates; the cards are supposed to be sent to the designated institution. "It is an absurd rule," says an official. "When a student will get to know his result even otherwise, why deprive him of seeing the marks. Besides, this only adds to the bureaucratic delay in despatching the result," he reasons.

Sources point out that a student who took the final year exams at the PU, had to forgo her claim to the law seat at the Himachal Pradesh University because her result was not received on time. In another case, an admission seeker at the Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) law course is still reportedly pulling strings to get her result desptached on time while her counselling is over.

In yet another case, sources point out, an MCA aspirant at the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology at Patiala was asked to deposit the fee for confidential result after his result, which officials claim had been despatched earlier, remained untraced.

Amarjyot Singh, spokesperson of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad stated that the outfit had submitted a memorandum to Controller of Examinations Dr Sodhi Ram, listing out the difficulties regarding delay in declaration of results and demanded early declaration.
