Muzaffer Ali to make film on Kargil conflict

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
LUCKNOW, JULY 21: The sufferings of local people during the Kargil conflict and the role of soldiers, not just as men guarding the frontiers of the country but also as human beings saving and helping war-torn people, has touched the heart of noted film-maker Muzaffer Ali, who plans to portray the different facets of the crisis on celluloid.

Coming out of a 13-year-long spell of inactivity, Ali, renowned as a maker of sensitive films with mostly Uttar Pradesh as the background, plans to capture the beauty and tragedy of Kashmir.

After an abortive attempt to make Zooni, a film on the life and times of a legendary Kashmiri poetess, this time, Ali wants to venture into the snow-clad mountains to ``peep into the psyche'' of people torn by the continuous strife and Kargil conflict.

``Kargil would not just go down in the history as the victory of Indian forces, but also as a conflict that highlighted the tragedy of families of numerous martyrs who sacrificed their lives saving others and protecting theboundaries of the nation,'' Ali said.

Although the story of the film has yet to take final shape, Ali plans to build it around a girl in the midst of the crisis, her family and its relationship with the soldiers.

``The effort is to view the personal tragedy in totality with the situation,'' he adds.

``Film actress Tabu has agreed to play the lead character and efforts are on to rope in other mainstream actors like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Nana Patekar to play other roles,'' Ali adds.

The film maker agrees that the attempt might result in glorifying the armed forces, but ``in the present crisis, the men in olive green deserve all praise''.

The story, screenplay and dialogue writer is prolific writer Parveen Talha, who is also a senior bureaucrat and has been associated with Ali in his last venture Anjuman.

``My story would be based on the real life incidents of the natives there and the soldiers' families who have experienced the tragedy from close quarters,'' Talha, who also has thecredit of penning screenplays of Ali's Husn-e-Jana and Ramesh Sippy's Gatha, says.

The duo plan to do a lot of research to make the film ``as authentic as possible'' and visit Kargil, Drass and Batalik sectors before starting work on the project.

The proceeds from the film would go towards Kargil martyrs' families relief fund, they add.

Ali wants his old favourite Khayyam, who made the immortal tunes for Umrao Jaan, to score the music for his new venture.
