Surat city to get passport centre
A passport collection centre will start operations in the city from August 2, an official statement issued here said on Wednesday. The centre will be located at the third floor of Bahumali Building, A block, and will be open from 10 am to 2 pm everyday. Application forms for passports will be accepted at the centre, which will cover Surat, Navsari, Bharuch, Valsad and Dangs districts in South Gujarat. It will be inaugurated by the Ahmedabad passport divisional officer at 11 am on August 2.

Meet cancelled
A seminar on the Prime Minister's Employment Bankable Yojna, slated to be held at 2.30 pm on July 24 at Samruddhi building, has been cancelled, a release issued by the District Industries Centre, the organisers, said. Departments and people concerned have been asked to take note of the change.

Honoured
Biswajeet Pattanayak, joint General Manager, Essar Steel Limited, was presented a scroll of honour and a trophy by the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, which just concluded it annual INSERTECH meet, for his ``contribution to human resource management''. Pattanayak, who has several books to his credit, is an advisor to the Board of Research, American Biographical Institute, USA.

Kargil yatra
Three KRIBHCO employees from Surat called on Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpai on their way to Kargil. J K Vin, M G Umrawala and N N Nayak set off on their `Real Vijay Yatra' on motorcycles on July 15. They plan to collect rathis from the States on their way to present to the jawans on the eve of Raksha-Bandhan'.

Awards sought
In a faxed letter to the president and prime minister, Rajubhai Thakkar, president of the Akashmat Nivaran Kendra, has urged the awarding of Rs 10 lakhs to the families of each Kargil martyr, Rs 5 lakhs to the injured and Rs 3 lakhs to each active soldier.

Seminar on tax
A seminar on Direct Taxes was organised by the Income Tax Practitioners' Association at the Surat People's Hall, Samruddhi. Inaugurating the meeting, Income Tax Commissioner R B Shukla said such seminars should be held more often as there were constant changes in the income-tax act.

Resignation sought
Surat city Congress general secretary and councillor Bhupendra Solanki has demanded the resignation of Town Planning committee chairman Nalin Kadiwalas for his alleged mishandling of the Althan reserved plot. Solanki alleged that the elected BJP leaders, who were hand-in-glove with builders, had succeeded in de-reserving most of the land around the university for sale at throwaway prices.
