SURAT, July 21: After three days of heavy rainfall in the city and most parts of South Gujarat, there was a general reduction in rain in most parts with negligible rainfall in most areas of the region on Wednesday. While the city recorded a meagre 1.2 mm of rainfall during the day, all talukas of Navsari and Valsad also received very little or no rainfall in the past 24 hours.Meanwhile, most of the 870 people shifted to Nagar Prathamik Schools in Udhna and Pandesara began returning to their slums on Wednesday. Water logging at the affected slums -- Nagarsennagar, Krishnanagar, Khwajanagar, Jai Bhishamnagar and Gadhnagar -- has reduced considerably after the dry spell, thus enabling the return of those shifted by the Surat Municipal Corporation.
However, Fatehsinh Takhatsinh, sarpanch of Sanya Hemad village on the outskirts of the city, informed the Kapodara police on Wednesday afternoon that villagers had recovered the dead body of Atmaram Vasant Rathod, (42) a resident of Parsi Falia area of the village. Rathod's dead body was fished out from a lake on the outskirts of the village at noon today.
He was last seen bathing in the lake, which was overfull due to incessant rainfall in the area since Sunday, and drowned. With this, the death toll due to drowning has gone up to four in the past two days. The city remained incident-free on Wednesday as far as rain-related mishaps were concerned, the fire brigade said.
Although most talukas of Surat district remained dry during the day, they received between 10 and 25 mm of rainfall during Tuesday night, the district flood control room said. Mandvi taluka of the district has got the season's highest rainfall -- 1113 mm (44 inches) -- so far.
The Navsari district flood control room said on Wednesday evening that since 8:30 am, there was no rainfall in all five talukas, namely Navsari, Jalalpore, Vansda, Gandevi and Chikhli. Similarly, there was negligible rainfall in all five talukas of Valsad including Valsad city, Pardi, Umargam, Dharampur and Kaprada.
Moderate rainfall has been forecast in the region during the next 24 hours. All rivers in the region, including, Auranga, Pal, Mindhola and Tapi were flowing well below the danger mark, the flood control people added.
