PANCHKULA, JULY 23: The local branch of the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), in collaboration with the State Bank of India, Sector 8, under the Community Service Banking, sponsored a multi-speciality health check-up, diagnosis and treatment camp at Jainendra Public School here.The camp, which was organised for the school students, marked the beginning of the golden jubilee celebrations of the FPAI, whose foundation day falls today.
The health camp was inaugurated by N. S. Nayyar, chief manager of the State Bank of India, Sector 8 branch. As many as 417 school children were examined by the doctors on the occasion. The camp involved general health check-up by Dr. Pinkesh K. Verma, a paediatrician from General Hospital here, and Dr. Sangeeta D. Pandita, medical officer in-charge, FPAI.
Dr. Verma informed that most of the students were found to be fit, but some had worm infestations, anaemia, upper respiratory tract infection and pyoderma. The children were also given counselling on health and hygiene.
The dental check-up and treatment was done by a team of doctors from the B. R. S. Dental College and Hospital, Kot Billa, including Dr. Sujata, Dr. Guninder and Dr. Shaloo Sharma.
Out of a total of 340 children checked up by the dental team, 315 children, in the age group of 5-13 years, were found to have dental caries. The eye check-up was conducted by Dr. Ashok Gupta from Drishti Eye Hospital, Panchkula. Dr. Gupta reported that six children had refractive error in the eyes, one had squint and about 10 per cent of the children had allergic eye diseases.
Others who participated in the camp included Dr. W. D. Jain, Honorary Treasurer, FPAI, and Adarsh Chand, member of the executive committee.
SAS NAGAR: The SAS Nagar branch of the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) concluded the fortnight long celebrations organised to mark the golden jubilee year of the FPAI.
On the occasion, a play highlighting the need for mother and child healthcare, was staged, besides a skit on AIDS awareness and prevention. A ballet showing a wife's long wait for her husband who is fighting in Kargil was also staged.
An exhibition of photographs on `Health Highway Project' including methods of preventing STD/HIV/AIDS, behaviour changes, diagnosis, treatment with counselling and condom promotion was also organised.
SAS Nagar FPAI branch manager I. P. S. Bajwa said that three condom vending machines would be installed in all the three truck unions of the township in Phases VI and V in the near future. PUDA also has a proposal to earmark land for FPAI office in the township, he added. He said that awareness programmes would be held throughout the year involving sexual health, responsible lifestyles, survival and health of children, to improve public knowledge and to play a more effective role as an NGO.
