Mayor Madhukar Pawle is of the view that frequent charges against the medical superintendent is a cause of concern and the issue of his appointment should be settled once and for all. Pawle said he would be calling a special general body meeting to examine charges against him and the overall functioning of the YCMH.

The legitimacy of the appointment of YCMH medical superintendent was questioned at the civic general body meeting on Monday during which a section of corporators charged that general work at the YCMH was not satisfactory. Municipal Commissioner B I Nagrale in his explanation said that the minimum eligibility criteria for the medical superintendent was a post graduate degree, but the superintendent now appointed did not possess it.

Party leader Nana Shitole demanded to know why persons with proper qualifications were not appointed for the posts of the medical superintendent and the municipal officer of health (MOH) had not been filled for the last two years. Nagrale in reply stated that the process of appointment for the post of MOH had already been initiated.

The post would be filled on the basis of seniority-cum-merit, he added. Nagrale also stated that a three-member committee had been formed for coordination of work between the staff of the YCMH and the D Y Patil Medical College, which uses facilities for training of the students. The members comprise the commissioner, MOH, and the Dean of the college, besides the YCMH superintendent.

The functioning of the medical superintendent had came under flak from corporator Yogesh Behl who said that no developments were taking place at the YCMH. The machinery at the hospital was lying idle and the patients were made to suffer, he charged. He also questioned the superintendent's right to issue directives to the medical staff of the D Y Patil Medical College.

Opposition leader Amrut Parhad however defended the superintendent saying that the latter had been working only in the interest of the municipal corporation and not the college. It was because of the superintendent that new training courses were started at the YCMH.
