AHMEDABAD, July 26: Tension gripped the walled city here again on Monday afternoon following two incidents of stabbing and stone-throwing each in the Shahpur and Mirzapur areas where groups of people gathered despite prohibitory orders in force.Shop-keepers in the old city areas quickly pulled down their shutters and many a people were seen running to safety. The police confirmed that two groups had indulged in stone pelting in Shahpur and Mirzapur areas. The police also confirmed two incidents of stabbing in Mirzapur where one of the injured was son of a police inspector. The injured have been hospitalised. Curfew had been clamped in the Dariapur and Kalupur areas of the walled city on July 20 following death of a man and injury to about a dozen others, including six policemen, in group clashes. Nearly a dozen more minor cases, including stabbingincidents, were reported thereafter. About 40 persons were arrested during the week. Even after the curfew was lifted on July 23, the situation in the walled citycontinued to be tense.
Meanwhile, police patrolling has been intensified on Monday in the sensitive areas. The authorities have also deployed Rapid Action Force (RAF) in these areas.
