Periscope on Pakistan
Jitendra Pant
Liberty has higher priority, not bread While the Prime Minister may be right in asking ``how long will we continue to buy cannons by snatching morsels of bread from the mouths of the people'', those who have a mission do not live by bread alone. The liberty of a people has often a higher priority over bread .And to get that liberty, gun-powder and ammunition have to be acquired at the cost of the bread. The people of pakistan should be prepared by the Prime Minister to face economic and physical hardships and not be told to search for peace at the cost of Kashmir.Dump Simla, Washington agreements THE FRONTIER POST: India is not in a position to start war on international borders. Internally, India is involved in crushing separatist movements like Khalistan, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Nagaland, Jharkhand and Mizoram. If India shifts its armed forces from these areas then these movements will become strong and that won't suit India. If we analyse the Nawaz-Clinton communique inthis background then the real intentions of both Vajpayee and Clinton are revealed. Both are demanding that the mujahideen vacate Kargil. Now, the communique is binding on us; not the Lahore Declaration. and we are answerable to a superpower. Though we are capable of telling lies to others, we cannot mislead the world powers: The US Congress is not the Pakistani Parliament. The President is answerable to Congress and he has to honour whatever he commits. In fact, after signing the agreement, Pakistan has gone one step backward and we are completely trapped. Still we can come out. Pakistan should tell the USA that we cannot honour this agreement. We also discard the Simla Agreement. Instead of doing good it has only complicated things.Psychiatrist should examine Nawaz MUSSAWAT: The chairman of the Pakistan Awami Tehrik, Tahirul Qadri, has said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should be examined by a psychiatrist as his thinking reflects his business background and not his role as apolitical leader. Addressing a gathering of Pakistanis in New York, Dr Tahir said it has now been proved that Mr Nawaz is a coward and he cannot deal with the enemy effectively. His recent decisions will attract the wrath of the mujahideen as well as the Pakistanis, he added.Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
