PUNE, JULY 26: The Sahakarnagar police claimed to have solved a number of chain snatching cases and recovered goods worth Rs 75,000 with the arrest of a man near Gajalaxmi Society in Sahakarnagar last night. The police have also recovered a revolver and a sword and a host of vehicle number plates, helmets and bunches of duplicate keys from Suresh Umaji Yeshwante (49).Two days back the Kothrud police had registered a case of chain snatching in their area. A rickshaw driver and vegetable vendor in the vicinity had noted down the motorcycle number (MH-12C-3575) of the alleged culprit.
After the motorcycle number was circulated among the various police stations, the Sahakarnagar police picked him up on the same motorcycle. Investigations revealed that the registration number of the motorcycle was false. Further questioning led the police to Yeshwante's house where they found a number of mangalsutras, more registrations plates and a bunch of duplicate keys.
Crime statistics show that Sahakarnagar, Swargate and Kothrud police stations had shown a marked increase in chain snatching cases. The police had been suspecting a gang behind these cases for sometime. With Yeshwante's arrest the police hope to crack a few more cases of chain snatching.
The accused was produced in court on Sunday and has been remanded to police custody till July 28. Further investigations are being conducted by assistant police inspector Nawant Bere of the detection branch of Sahakarnagar police station.
Theft case: Gold jewellery worth Rs 10,500 was stolen from a house in Shantiban Society in Bhartinagar, Kothrud.
According to a complaint filed by Meenakshi Ramesh Dongre unknown thieves broke into her house on Saturday night while she was away on a pilgrimage to Alandi. Police claim that the thieves broke the lock of the house and then decamped with the jewellery. The Kothrud police have registered a case of hose break in and theft.
