According to police, the accused had allegedly robbed a businessman, Shirish Nahar, in December 1998. Investigations revealed that one of the accused, Dattatreya Jadhav would monitor Nahar's deposit of his daily cash collection with the camp branch of the Cosmos Bank.

Jadhav and his accomplices formulated a plan and cornered Nahar on December 15. They threatened him and after throwing chilli powder in his eyes robbed him of Rs 1,90,000. Nahar subsequently lodged an FIR with the cantonment police. The case was handed over to head constables Nandu Yende and Vilas Rapure of the detection branch of the cantonment police station who traced Jadhav.

Jadhav was arrested on July 18 and under sustained interrogation revealed the identities and addresses of his accomplices who were also involved in the robbery. Based on the information provided by Munna, the police raided the other areas and arrested Anil Patil, Dnyaneshwar Pawar, Sachin Tanwade, Somnath Salunke and Ramchandra Maruti Ghadge alias Munna.

While Tanwade, Pawar and Salunke were arrested from Hadapsar Gadital, Patil and Ghadge was picked up from Solapur district. While the police claim to have solved the case, one more of the accused who hails from Indapur is yet to be arrested.
