Action on weak structures sought

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, JULY 26: The general body meeting of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) today saw a pandemonium when the corporators grilled the civic administration alleging that it had failed to take action against the dilapidated structures in the city.

While raising a point of order, Suhas Kulkarni informed the general body that five persons had a narrow escape when a three storied building collapsed due to heavy rain on Saturday night.

Visibly agitated, Kulkarni demanded to know the reason for the failure of the senior civic official to visit the spot. He was soon joined by Ujwal Keskar and others.

Despite promising to visit the spot on Tuesday morning, City Engineer Madhav Harihar failed to pacify the corporators who insisted that stern action should be initiated against the officials concerned.

Even Municipal Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad could not convince the corporators who went on to allege that the administration was providing misleading information.

Pointing out that a wall of a dilapidated structure in Budhwar Peth had collapsed last week, Balaji Telkar demanded that the administration set up a task force to demolish hazardous structures.

The corporators were satisfied only when Gaikwad promised that he would himself look into the matter.
