BJP retains AMTS chairman

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, July 26: The BJP is most likely to retain about half a dozen chairmen of its various committees in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in view of the municipal elections slated for the year 2000.

The party officially retained two chairmen, Dharmendra Shah for Standing Committee and Hasmukh Barot for Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS), during its meeting on Monday. Other names will be announced during the general board meeting on July 29, according to official information here.

Sources in the corporation said the strategy to reinstate the chairmen would not only help the party during the ensuing parliamentary elections but also strengthen the base of BJP leaders in their wards and constituencies. The two appointments on Monday cleared BJP's strategy for elections as Shah has a good hold on AMC officials and party corporators besides some Opposition leaders. Similarly, Barot's performance, according to sources close to senior BJP leaders, has been satisfactory and as per the party's expectations.

It is learnt that corporators who had been strong claimants for the post of standing committee chairman and AMTS chairman will be favoured this time. AUDA chairman and BJP steering committee chairman Surendra Patel said that a committee of BJP leaders would meet on the night of July 28 to discuss the names before releasing them for the general board.

Sources said a total of 13 committees were to be formed. Atul Bhavsar of Water Supply and Sewage Committee, Bhavin Sheth of Roads and Buildings committee, Kamlesh Patel of Hospital committee, Popatlal Soni of Health committee and Ambalal Kota of Solid Waste committee are likely to get a second chance to prove their mettle. All these corporators are considered dedicated party workers with a good record and credibility.

Similarly, sources said that Amit Shah of the Octroi Committee might also get a second chance.

Bhatt, who was a strong claimant for the mayoral post but had to withdraw due to A K Patel's support to Malini Atit, is another name doing the rounds for a committee post. Dedicated RSS worker Leenaben Adhvaryu also stands a chance. Her name was also considered for the post of mayor.

Other corporators including Bhartiben Patel, Krishnavadan Brahmabhatt, Rajendrakumar Brahmabhatt and Yogesh Desai are hopeful too though everything depends on the consensus in the party.

Meanwhile, the decision of the standing committee to add 50 new buses to the AMTS fleet for AUDA areas received wide appreciation from the senior leaders.
