Kidambi holds Romanian GM

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
BIEL (SWITZERLAND), JULY 26: Grandmaster Vadim Milov of Switzerland satisfied the local public with a crushing win over GM J Klovans to join Grandmasters Sergey Volkov and Rashkovsky (both Russia) in the lead with five points at the end of the 6th round of the International Chess Festival here.

In an all-Russian affair at the top board, GM Volkov (5) and GM Rashkovsky (5) agreed quickly to a friendly draw.

National champion K Sasikiran (4) defeated 15-year-old Fide Master Radjabov (3) of Azerbaijan with white pieces in Stonewall variation of Dutch defence.

National junior champion S Kidambi (3.5) continued his excellent performance by holding veteran Grandmaster Fiorian Gheorghiu (3.5) of Romania to a draw. Kidambi opened with Grunfeld defence against Gheorghju's Queen pawn opening. After 15 moves, Gheorghiu offered a draw which Kidambi boldly declined. The Indian lad nearly paid the price for overstretching the position but managed to hang on the balance to draw in a rook and pawn ending after 40moves.

IM Abhijit Kunte (4) had a slight plus from opening against Ofhman Moussa (3) of UAE in Pirc defence. Moussa fought well to bring equal position but failed to complete the stipulated 40 moves and was declared lost on time.

IM V Saravanan (3) had an outside passer and clear advantage against IM Taleb (3.5) of UAE.

Sarvanan however failed to find the correct plan and agreed for a draw. Veteran IM Jokcosic (3.5) of Yugoslavia scored a lucky win over IM DV Prasad (2.5) in Pirc defence. IWM Anupama Gokhale (2.5) bounced back with a fighting win over local junior P Sevrin (1.5).

IM Anatoly Bykhovsky (4) of Russia played a beautiful game to outplay Indian Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay (3).
