Time to retire, Kapil advices Azharuddin

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, JULY 26: Barely two days before the crucial selection committee meeting, former Indian captain Kapil Dev has advised Mohammed Azharuddin to go into ``retirement'' from active cricket.

``If Sachin (Tendulkar) is willing to be the captain, then there is no one better than him'' Kapil Dev told the television programme 'Ru-ba-ru.

``Azharuddin has already played best part of his cricketing life and now he is just passing his time,'' opined the world's highest Test wicket taker in the television interview.

The selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is meeting in Nagpur on July 28 to decide about the captain of the National team for the coming series.

Kapil was of the view that Azharuddin's performance is not what it used to be. ``At the age of 36 you don't have the kind energy one needs to play. Your mind thinks something and you are let down by your body. That sharpness is no longer there in your game,'' Kapil said explaining why Azhar shouldretire.

Asked if he was interested in becoming coach or national selector, Kapil said: ``I owe everyting to cricket and if the country wants my services I will not shy away.''

About the public perception that he is promoting Ajay Jadeja for the India captaincy, Kapil said: ``National interest should not over-ride personal interest. If I place my interest above that of the nation, then I am pulling myself down. And I will never do that.''
