MUMBAI, JULY 27: Two brothers and their mother were sentenced on Monday to rigorous life imprisonment for the murder of their neighbour at Chembur three years ago.Malang Ramanna Kasa Reddy alias Raju, his brother Sanjay Ramanna Kasa Reddy alias Salim, their mother Farida Begum Ramanna Reddy alias Savita were sentenced for the murder of Shankar Yadav at Siddhivinayak Society, Mahatma Phule Zopadpatti, Chembur on March 21, 1996.
Yadav had picked up a fight with his neigbour Ajay alias Rafiq (now absconding), with whom the Reddys were staying as guests, after Ajay reportedly teased Yadav's sister. On the day of the murder Ajay allegedly teased Yadav's sister when she was on way to the toilet. When Yadav barged into Ajay's house to confront him the Reddys and two other friends attacked him choppers, swords and knives. With 51 stab wounds on his body, Yadav was rushed to the nearest hospital where he was declared dead before admission.
Six persons were arrested and charged in this case including Ajay's twofriends, Rajesh Bhimrao Pawar and Anand Babu Mane. According to the investigating officer Police Sub Inspector Sunil Kavlekar, Ajay had later joined the Chhota Rajan gang and threatened the members of the Yadav family on numerous occasions demanding that they withdraw the case.
Early this year the case came up for trial at the sessions court. Special Public Prosecutor Dinanath K Joshi examined 13 witnesses. Additional Sessions Judge S B Munde, sentenced Malang, Sanjay and their mother Savita to undergo life impriosonment while Pawar and Mane were acquitted due to lack of evidence. Advocates J G Bhanushali and B P Singh appeared for the accused.
