MUMBAI, JULY 27: Maharashtra Chief Election Officer, Dr D K Sankaran, has stalled the State Government's move to allot 43 plots owned by Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) to different social organisations. Some of the recipients of the plots were reportedly close to Shiv Sena, particularly the Thackeray family.Addressing a press conference at Mantralaya this afternoon, Sankaran said a report has already been submitted to the Election Commission of India. ``The MHADA plots will not be allotted and we have issued instructions to this effect,'' he said. After the government initiated the process of allotment early this month, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Chhagan Bhujbal had lodged a complaint with the state election commission.
The revised electoral rolls for the forthcoming general elections were published on July 21, 1999, Sankaran disclosed. The total number of voters has increased by 1.48 per cent as compared to January 1998, he said. According to the statistics, thenumber of voters in Maharashtra today is 5,66,74,960, said Sankaran.
