Rs 430 cr package for J&K

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA  
NEW DELHI, JULY 27: The Cabinet today approved a package worth Rs 430 crore, for improving Doordarshan and All India Radio services in Jammu and Kashmir.

Doordarshan will set up two high power transmitters each at Nowshera, Tithwal, Kupwara, Gurez and Turez and Samba for DD1 and DD2 programmes besides providing mobile units at twelve locations at a cost of Rs 218 crore. AIR will set up nine relay stations and upgrade three existing transmitters at a cost of Rs 48.40 crore.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Pramod Mahajan told newspersons after the Cabinet meeting that the package has been announced keeping in view of the Kargil factor and to counter Pakistani disinformation in vulnerable areas. An amount of Rs 163.67 crore will be spent for developing software for AIR and Doordarshan under this proposal, he added.

The upgradation of the AIR and DD stations will began immediately and will be completed by June 2001.

An empowered committee of secretaries, chaired by secretary, information andbroadcasting, has also been set up to ensure its speedy implementation.
