SURAT, July 27: Even as the Surat Municipal Corporation took up large-scale cleaning and disinfecting operations, to counter monsoon-related diseases, in most parts of the city on Monday, a woman died in the Ashaktashram hospital late on Monday night after being admitted there with symptoms of diarrhoea. One Veena Jeevan Chavda, a resident of 33 Suryanagar Society, Ashwini Kumar Road died at 11 pm in the hospital, where she was brought in a serious condition. The woman complained of vomiting since Sunday night and died within an hour of being admitted to the hospital. Consumption of contaminated water was said to be the cause of her death.
Meanwhile, primary health workers of the civic body continued spraying insecticides in the low-lying areas of the city, slums of the South Zone and areas of Rander, Adajan and Katargam. Though more than 200 blood samples of people residing in these areas were also taken, no serious diseases were detected, officials said.
While a number of people visited the New Civil Hospital complaining of fever and other related symptoms on Tuesday, doctors stated that only six of the patients were found to be suffering from malaria. Earlier 15 cases of malaria were reported on Monday, thus raising fears of an outbreak of the disease in slums of the city.
