Viren, Asad in jr India squad

BANGALORE, JULY 27: Two Mumbai boys, Viren Rasquinha and Asad Khan, have been named in the 20-member junior Indian hockey team that will represent the country for the European and the eight-nation tournament to be held at Holland and Poland next month.

Viren plays for Tatas and was the captain of the Mumbai team in the Junior Nationals. Asad Khan is from Sports Authority of India team, Kandivli. He was the second-highest scorer in the Junior Nationals that were held at Bangalore.

The junior India hockey team for the European tour and eight nation hockey tournament, to be played at Amsteleveen (Holland) and Poznan (Poland), will be leaving Delhi on August 8, IHF secretary Jyothikumaran told reporters here today.

The captain is yet to be named, he said, adding names of Iqbal Singh and Bimal Lakra are under consideration.

India are placed in pool A along with Germany, Egypt and Belgium.

``The team is well balanced and we are placed in good pool where there are not tough teams. Though we have lost toEgypt at Cairo by a 3-0 margin, we intend to do better. Our strength is in the midfield,'' said chief coach CR Kumar.

The team on its tour to the Netherlands will play one match against England and three ties against Holland, from August 10 to 16.

In Poland, the Indians would participate in an eight-nation tournament from August 23 to 29.

Goalkeepers: Alex David (Railways) and Davesh Chauhan (Air-India).

Full-backs: Sukhamrit Pal Singh (Services), Len Aiyappa (Air-India) and Bikramjit Singh (PSB).

Half-backs: Parmajit Singh (Services), Radhakrishnana (TN), Arjun Halappa (Kar), Bimal Lakra (Centre of Excellence), Shamsuz Zoha (UP) and Proboth Tirkey (Orissa).

Forwards: Gursewak Singh (Pun), Iqbal Singh (Bengal), Viren Rasquinha (Mumbai), Ajitpal Singh (PSB), Asad Khan (Mumbai), Bipin Fernandez (Kar), Gopinath (TN), Inderjith Sing (Chd) and Prabjoth Singh (Air-India).

Standbyes: Ranjit Singh (UP), Gurjant Singh (Centre of Excellence), Cyprian Aind(Services) and Kanwal Preet Singh (PSB).
