General hospital rape case -- Bail pleas dismissed

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Aug 2: Bail applications of Vijay Kumar, Dhani Ram and Laik Ram, accused of raping a 22-year-old in Sector 16 General Hospital, were declined by the court today.

Rejecting the bail applications of the trio, UT Additional District and Sessions Judge S.S. Lamba observed the offence is of a serious nature and affects the entire society. He held that if such people are allowed to roam about freely, no woman will safe in going to the hospital to get herself examined.

The defence counsel raised the point that the FIR against the accused was lodged after a delay of six days. The Judge, however, held that there is no force in the contention because women are generally reluctant to come forward in cases where their honour is involved. The three accused were booked here on June 24 under Sections 376 (rape), 506 and 34 of IPC.

Sector 26 police station blast case
Nine years after a portion of Sector 26 Police Station was blasted by terrorists, UT Additional District and Sessions Judge S.S. Lamba today fixed the case on August 19 for framing of charges against accused Gurcharanjit Singh. The accused, also an alleged activist of Khalistan Liberation Force, was declared a proclaimed offender by the court in March 1991. The Judge also dismissed the application filed earlier by the defence counsel for supply of deficit copies of the challan. The challan was filed in the court of JMIC on April 20 this year. Earlier, the bail applications moved by Gurcharanjit Singh, besides Gurvinder Singh, another accused were rejected by the court.

The duo, accused of blowing up a portion of the Sector 26 Police Station in July 1990, were arrested by the Chandigarh Police early this month.

A resident of Sallohpur village in Gurdaspur district, Gurcharanjit Singh had been booked by the police under Section 307, 427, 212 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code, besides Section 3 and 4 of the TADA Act, along with Section 3 and 4 of the Explosives Act.

He, along with constable Satwinder Singh and Balwant Singh of the Chandigarh Police, besides one Doulat Singh had caused an explosion at the police station, according to the prosecution. While Satwinder Singh and Balwant Singh were arrested, Gurcharanjit Singh, along with Doulat Singh had absconded.
