NEW DELHI: Indian team put up a stupendous show winning the 2nd International Cycle Polo Championship in Vancouver (Canada). India swept through the six-nation competition beating Scotland 10-4, Canada 8-3, Mexico 12-4, South Africa 11-4 and United States 11-5, to top the group in the league-cum-knock out championship from July 30-August 3 event.

In the semi-finals, the Indian men ousted Scotland 14-4 and emerged champion by prevailing 9-7 over the US. The Indian team comprised Shiv Kumar (capt), Praveen Kumar, Gopal Kumar, ML Nayak, Prabhu Dayal and Vikash Chander.

Boxers haul five

CHANDIGARH: The Indian junior boxers returned home with five bronze medals in the 4th Brandenburg Cup in Germany from July 29-August 1. India finished fifth in the 15-team competition.

Akhil Kumar (48 kg), Lal Din Sanga (51 kg), Parveen Kumar (60 kg), Dilbagh Singh (63.5 kg) and D Bhagyarajan (63.5 kg) were the Indian bronze medallists.

Indian in ITTFEINDHOVEN

India's Ranga Ramanujan, a life member of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), has been nominated to the five-member Advisory Council of the sport's world body at its biennial general meeting here on Tuesday.Ramanujan is a former president of the Table Tennis Federaton of India. To him goes the credit of successfully organising two World Championships 1951 in Mumbai and 1975 in Calcutta.

Girls win at last

MUMBAI: Indian scored their first win in a Pool C league match when they pipped Wales 2-1 in the World Junior Girls Squash Championship at Antwerp yesterday.

Debutants India avoided the woodenspoon after Pia Abraham crushed Staycey Preece 9-1, 9-3, 9-1 and Deepali Anvekar subdued Anna Vaughan 9-5, 9-3, 9-7.
