MUMBAI, AUG 9: The battle between the two biggest music channels on television will now be governed by one factor: the remote control. According to Mahesh Murthy, a consultant with ChanneL [V] which was maharelaunched today, ``We have based the relauch on one fundamental premise: who has the remote control at what time of the day.''As per the new format, the programmes are divided into three time slots: a teen slot from 4 to 7 pm, a mainstream slot from 7 to 10 pm and Late [V] which will unfold from 10 pm. Beginning Monday, ChanneL [V] will air 20 new shows, new promos and an all-new look presented by 12 new VJs. ``We have conceived different concepts for the two broad target groups that we have established: the budget-sensitive, young group and the slightly older group. The language will be a mix of English, Hindi and the way these languages are spoken in different parts of the country. The promos and programmes will be something that everyone can relate to,'' said consultant Shashanka Ghosh. Headded, ``We have set up production facilities in Delhi, Bangalore, Calcutta and Chennai apart from the central production set-up in Mumbai that will cater to the youth in different parts of the country.''
Commenting on the counter-competition strategy that has gone into the revamp, Murthy said, ``We have conducted an extensive market survey to realise the needs of the youth and there is no attempt at copying or attacking any other music channel.'' The new programming covers travel, sports, information, fashion, career and relationships. All the 20 shows will be on air on August 15 throughout the day, the purpose being to ``show what Independence means to the Indian youth'' in the words of Suresh Bala, who recently took over as general Manager. He declared that the channel would now be the ``only youth TV channel'' which had ``moved beyond merely playing music for the youth.'' Those also present at the Maharelaunch included Steve Smith, World-wide Managing Director of V, Ajay Vidyasagar, Head ofCommercials and Rajesh Tahir, Head of Programming.
