Gaikwad orders probe into use of BPMC Act

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Aug 10: Municipal Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad has ordered inquiry into use of Section 67 C (3) of Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation Act (BPMC) while spending the money on rehabilitation of Shantinagar slum in Kothrud at alternate site.

The issue came up at the standing committee meeting today when several members took strong objection on using the said section, which empowers municipal commissioner to spend the money for emergency reasons. The members said the Shantinagar slum was located on a private plot and corporation had no reason to spend money on rehabilitation of the slum dwellers.

When it was pointed out by the civic officials that rehabilitation work was done because of High Court orders, members said the administration had misinterpreted the court order. Gaikwad later asked additional municipal commissioner Deepak Kapoor to conduct an inquiry into the matter. Kapoor has been asked to study the court order and would also inquire whether the work needed to be done immediately by using section 67 (3) C of BPMC Act.
