Nominated Samajwadi Party corporator Ramesh Joshi resigned from the Brihanmumbai Coroporation (BMC) on Monday, delivering a blow to the party's position in the corporation. Sources say he is planning to re-join the Janata Dal, which he was earlier a member of.Joshi wants to contest the Assembly elections from Goregaon, and has reportedly been assured a ticket by the JD. Joshi had won the municipal elections in 1985 on a JD ticket. In 1987, he joined the SP and was nominated by that party for Goregaon.
The norm is that corporators resign after winning the Assembly elections, but as Joshi is going to switch parties, he would have been liable for action had he not resigned. The SP has lost a senior, able corporator with his defection. When the Mayor-in-Council had been introduced, Joshi had single-handedly opposed the move. He had even gone to the extent of filing a writ petition in the Bombay High Court, which had been subsequently turned down. Well-versed with corporation law, he is known for raising themaximum number of point of orders during general body meetings.
