Rai, Sunita named best athletes

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
BANGALORE, AUG 10: Sanjay Kumar Rai and Sunita Rani were adjudged best male and female athletes respectively in the fifth Federation Cup athletics championships that concluded here yesterday.

After breaking the 1,500 National record on the opening day, the 19-year-old Rani kept the crowd at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium mesmerised with her elegant and energetic run in the 5,000 metres on Monday.

Sunita had asserted before the race, ``I'll do 15:45 in 5,000.'' When the clocked stopped, it read an astounding 15:41.4s.

Given the lack of competition second-placed Sunita Deb finished over two minutes after her the performance, that improved her own mark of 15:54.43 set en route to winning the silver at the Bangkok Asian Games, stood strong evidence for her amazing self-drive and spirit.

The day had begun with Anju Markose, another member of the `glamour brigade' of Indian athletics, rewriting the national record in triple jump. Braving a wind of 1.3 against her face, Anju removed Lekha Thomas' mark of13.27 metres out of the record books on her first jump.
