Central nod for SMC medical college
The Surat Municipal Corporation has received the Central nod to start a medical college. In response to a proposal sent to the Union health ministry, Municipal Commissioner G P Mohapatra received an assenting fax message to this effect on Saturday. The corporation now awaits the inspection by the Medical Council of India.

Grover in town
Noted architect Karan Grover was the chief guest at a meeting of the Indian Institute of Interior Designers, Surat chapter, recently. Addressing the gathering, Grover stressed on the need to draw upon one's cultural heritage in modern interior design. In an audio-visual presentation, he took those present on an international tour of interior design and architecture with the help of five projectors, a large screen and an audio system.

SMC contests
The Surat Municipal Corporation will organise a patriotic and group song competition from 10 am on August 18 at the Katargam community hall. A marriage song competition will held on August 19 at the same place, same time.

Poll workshop
The electoral officer has organised a two-phase training workshop for presiding and polling officers of the Mandvi and Surat Lok Sabha constituencies from August 18 to August 31.

Money raised
Lourdes and St Xavier's, the city's two leading convent schools, have collected Rs 3.5 lakhs for soldier welfare funds. The amount was handed over to Major-General Sebastin of EME, Vadodara, on July 12 at a function organised jointly by the two schools. While St Xavier's raised Rs 1.5 lakhs, Lourdes Convent collected Rs 2 lakhs.

Case dismissed
Vadodara:
A special judge on Monday dismissed a corruption case against Chandresh Yagnik, former depot manager of the State Transport, Vadodara, on the grounds of insufficient evidence.
