CEC goes easy on PM for BJP's mural mistake

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
PONDICHERRY, AUG 22: The Chief Election Commissoner, Dr M S Gill, said here on Sunday he had `read carefully' the newspaper reports of criticisms by various parties of the use of armed forces chiefs' portraits at the Prime Minister's Haryana meeting.

Talking to reporters at the Raj Nivas, he said, ``I have noticed that the criticism had been immediately accepted by the Haryana BJP secretary, Modi, who had also spoken about the Prime Minister's anger and direction that it should not have been used.''

``It was a mistake,'' Gill said adding that `with the Prime Minister's admission and direction for future correction the matter should end. In fact this is how a matured democracy works. I would suggest that all parties now move on to debating serious issues that should help the voters make the best choices.''

Earlier, talking to reporters in Chennai on his arrival from New Delhi on his way to Pondicherry, Gill said the present position of closing the campaigning at 10 pm would continue. ``It will be what itis,'' was his reply to a question whether the campaign timing would be increased as being sought by political parties. New Delhi en route to Pondicherry.

Referring to criticism by some political parties about officials involved in election work, Gill said during every election the bureaucrats and others involved in the election work had done a good job. ``I am confident that everywhere including in Tamil Nadu all those involved, whether police or other officials, would do a good job,'' he said.

Soon after his arrival, Gill was closeted in conversation with Tamil Nadu Home Secretary Shantha Sheila Nair and Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta.
