Vivek, Neha triumph

MUMBAI, AUG 22: Unseeded Neha Gangoli and fifth seed Vivek Gautam, both from Greater Mumbai, clinched the men's and women's singles titles respectively in the first Senior Maharashtra Selection Badminton Tournament at the National Sports Club of India here today. Both won the finals in straight sets.

Gautam, who had shocked top seed Vikrant Patwardhan in the semi-final yesterday, outclassed sixth seed Alok Singh (Mumbai Suburb) 15-8 15-7 in 40 minutes in the final. Earlier, Neha defeated top seed Meenakshi Wagh of Thane 11-6, 11-6 in 30 minutes to lift the women's singles title.

Gautam received Rs 8,000 while Neha was richer by Rs 4,000. Easy for D'AssisiST FRANCIS D'Assisi trounced a nine-strong St Xavier's, Vasai, 9-0 in an under-14 4G match of the MSSA-Colgate Inter-School football championship at the Holy Family School ground, Andheri, today. Niket Chokshi (3), Blaise Fernandes (2), Mavan Gomes (2), Mathew Misquitta and Zico Kinny were the goal-getters for D'Assisi.

Under-164M: St Joseph's, Kalamboli 1 (Sandeep Singh) drew with Anjuman Allana, VT 1 (Naved Ansari). U-16 4G: St Anthony's, Vakola 2 (Florence Miranda, Vittal Tarak Rane) bt St Aloysius, Nallasopara 0.

Under-14 knock-out: Bombay Scottish, Powai, failed to turn for their match against St Joseph's, Kalamboli. U-14 4L: Holy Family C 2 (Abhishek Jaroli 2) bt Our Lady of Remedy B 0.

Yadav, Rao dazzle

Three goals by Ashok Yadav propelled Mittal Arts to a 9-0 victory over Royal in a second-round game of the Inter-Collegiate football tournament at the University Stadium, today.

Kumta Amey (2), Kaushal Sharma (2), Glenn D'Souza and Ashley Pinto were the other scorers for Mittal Arts.

The other player to score three goals was Srinivas Rao of Sathye.
