NEW DELHI, AUG 23: The passenger car segment saw a 43-per cent increase in sales (including exports) in the month of July, which stood at 54,640 as compared to 37,950 units sold during the same month last year. Maruti Udyog, Telco, Daewoo, Ind Auto, Hyundai were the prime gainers.
Maruti sold a record 37,404 units during July, up 16.8 per cent from 32,008 units sold during the same month last year. Hyundai Motor India bagged the number two slot with a sales figure of 4,949 units for July, followed by Telco which sold 4,188 units as against 283 units sold last year.
Daewoo Motors' sales shot up from 875 units in July 1998 to 2,801 units during the last month. Hindustan Motors sold 2,038 units as against 1,830 units sold in July 1998.
Ind Auto also sold 1,800 units in July, up 78 per cent from 1,008 units a year earlier. Honda Siel saw a growth in sales too. It sold 850 units in July, as against 656 units sold in July 1998.
General Motors saw a drop in its sales from 342 units sold in July last year, to202 units sold last month. Ford India's sales dropped 27 per cent from 414 units in July 1998 to 302 units last month. Mercedes Benz India's sales at 88 units, down 13 per cent from 102 units a year earlier.
The two-wheeler industry saw a 1.6 per cent increase in sales and stood at 292,422 units. In the scooter segment, Bajaj Auto's sales dipped by 12 per cent and stood at 47,888 units followed by LML, whose retails dropped 16 per cent to 22,499 units. Maharashtra Scooters' sales dropped 35 per cent to 8,181 while TVS-Suzuki's scooter sales dropped 36 per cent at 11,412 units.
Kinetic Motor was the only manufacturer who saw a growth in sales. Its sales for July 1999 stood at 10,016 units, up 1.3 per cent from 9,881 units a year earlier.
In the motorcycle segment, total sales surged 8 per cent to 129,363 units in July 1999 from 119,395 units a year ago. Hero Honda's bike sales surged 26 per cent to touch 57.768 units while TVS-Suzuki saw sales grew 22 per cent at 28,708 units.
Bajaj Auto's motorcyclesales dropped 6 per cent at 25,494 units while Escorts Yamaha's sales dropped 23 per cent at 16,076 units. Royal Enfield also witnessed a 37 per cent drop in sales at 1,316 units. Total moped sales dipped by 2 per cent at 63,064 units from 64,933 units a year earlier.
MUL launches `Zen Classic'
NEW DELHI: Auto giant Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL) today introduced another variant of its popular small car `Zen' with classic looks, changed interiors and a price tag of Rs 3.64 lakhs to face the growing competition in a better way. The new variant `Zen Classic' has been restyled forgiving a different look as it has round head and tail lamps, redesigned dashboard, body coloured bumpers and chrome fininshed panels and grille. Zen classic is Euro-I emission norms compliant and would be available in the market from tomorrow as the company has already started dispatches, MUL managing director Jagdish Khattar, who recently took charge as the chief executive of the company from R S S L N Bhaskarudu, said at thelaunch.
