SOPU activists begin fast-unto-death

Chandigarh, Aug 23: Arun Rana and Jatinder Chadha, both activists of the Students' Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU), began a fast-unto-death outside the office of the PU Vice-Chancellor, here today.

The two have launched the hunger strike in support of the science students admitted in 1998-99 who have been denied promotion to the higher class under the new set of rules.

The students of BSc (Hons) first year, who could not obtain 24 credits and MSc candidates who could not obtain two-thirds of the total credits have been denied admission. The two are demanding promotion to all such candidates. Meanwhile, the chain hunger strike by SOPU activists on the issue entered the sixth day today.
