MUMBAI, AUGUST 24: Five Shiv Sena workers including the local Shakha Pramukh Rajesh Dubey were arrested by Worli police for allegedly instigating rioting and damaging property at the BDD Chawls late on Monday night. The five included Sena workers Deepak Dahibaokar, Dashrath Bhargav, Vinayak Kinjale and Vijay Bhange, were later released after they furnished a personal bond of Rs 950 this evening.
The arrests were made after a police constable and resident of the chawl complained about Dubey and his associates.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission is awaiting a police report before taking any action on the rioting that took place at the police quarters in the BDD Chawls, Worli late on Monday night.
Shiv Sena workers allegedly went on a rampage, attacking residents of buildings 64 and 65 in the chawl.
According to Suresh Karande, returning officer for the Mumbai South Central Parliamentary Constituency, the police report would be submitted on Wednesday after which action, if any, would betaken.
Meanwhile, a pall of fear has spread over the BDD chawls, hours after the incident. Ironically, most of them are family members of police constables. ``Today, even the families of policemen have no security,'' lamented one of them.
Most of the residents who spoke to Express Newsline did not want to be quoted and refused to comment.
Trouble began at around 9.45 pm on Monday, when around 30 Shiv Sena workers shouted slogans in their colony and began distributing pamphlets for the Sena's South-Central candidate Mohan Rawle.
``We told them to go away since they had not given us any jobs or done anything for the people in the last five years,'' said Janardhan Thakur (name changed), one of the chawl residents and son of a police constable. ``Even when our boys went to the sitting MLAs, he refused to recognise them,'' he added.
Thereafter, an altercation ensued with local Shakha Pramukh Ramesh Dube who was leading the Sena workers.
Some of the Sena activists were beaten up by theresidents. They left but returned half an hour later with a mob of around 100 persons.
``They were armed with hockey sticks and choppers and ran beserk,'' says Sakharam Patil. ``I slammed all the doors and windows shut as soon as I saw them coming towards the building,'' says Ishtiaq Ahmed (name changed), who lives on the ground floor of the chawl. Even as Ahmed cowered inside, the mob smashed tubelights, threw stones, hacked at doors and damaged a car and motorcycle.
However, nobody was injured and the rioting appears to have been carried out primarily to intimidate building residents. The rioters melted away as soon as the police arrived on the scene.
Both parties, including the Shakha pramukh and building residents have lodged counter-complaints at the Worli police station.
Election Commission Observer for the South-Central constituency accompanied by Additional Commissioner of Police (Central Zone) KL Prasad visited the scene of rioting this morning.
