Advani gives credit to PM

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, Aug 24: Union Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani, while addressing a Youth BJP worker meeting on Tuesday, gave the credit for the victory in Kargil to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee ``for the way he handled the situation, and the way he managed the war.''

The Home Minister said the Line of Control was not crossed by India, but by Pakistan. It was a military and diplomatic victory for the country, he said. ``When US president Bill Clinton invited the Prime Minister to US, he said he would not come until the last of the intruders is pushed out,'' Advani said.

Advani delivered a speech full of anecdotes and experiences to the BJP Youth wing workers, seemingly in a bid to motivate them for the ongoing campaigning in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency.

Making Kargil the backdrop of its election campaigning, the BJP has even named its youth workers ``Chunav Sainiks''.

Describing the situation on Kashmir, he said that if the battle of 1947, when Pakistan had intruded, had lasted for a week one-third of Kashmir would not have been occupied by Pakistan. ``But when our armies pushed back the intruders, Mountbatten told Jawaharlal Nehru about it and the issue went to the United Nations,'' he said. The audience at Tagore Hall comprised youth BJP workers, all with camouflage caps and saffron scarves, from the Ellisbridge assembly constituency, with the state home minister Haren Pandya assuring the audience of victory for Advani.

On nomination of T N Seshan as the Congress candidate, Pandya said he would not win. ``We know he had spoken against singing of Vande Mataram and against the Sardar Sarovar project,'' he said. ``The Congress decided to field a big name so that Advaniji would not be able to concentrate on other parts of the country,'' he said. ``But we assure him that he should reduce his stay here and go to other areas; we will handle the campaign here,'' he said.

Local BJP leaders, corporators and the Home Minister's wife Kamala Advani attended the meeting.
