Shuttlers advance

BANGALORE: Indians had an easy day in the qualifying rounds of the 1999 Konica Cup, which began in Singapore Badminton Hall on Monday.

Sidharth Jain scored over Ronald Susilo of Singapore and Li Chin Lin of Chinese Taipei. He won the opening round against the Singapore's 15-2, 15-0 and whipped Chinese Taipei player 15-3, 15-6.

P Gopi Chand and Manjusha Kanwar also qualified in the mixed doubles. They edged Gerald and Rong Muxi of Singapore 4-15, 15-10, 15-3.

Rapid Nationals

KOZHIKODE: The Rapid National under-14 and under-12 boys and girls chess championship will be held alongside the ongoing National Sub-junior championships at the Indoor Stadium. The rapid tourney will be held in the afternoon.

Chief arbiter K Ratnakumar said the entries were flowing in and would cross 150 by night. The first three rounds will be played from 3 p.m. from Wednesday in one-hour format and half-an-hour break for each round.

Veterans' TT

NEW DELHI: The Veterans' tabletennis championships in Goa has been postponed indefinitely.

The championship was earlier scheduled to be held from September 16-21. The new dates of the championships would be announced shortly.

Yalvigi restricts IA

CHENNAI: A five-wicket haul by Karnataka's Anand Yalvigi restricted Indian Airlines to 175 on the first day in the semifinals of the MRF-Buchi Babu Cricket tournament semifinals at the Southern Railway ground.

The other semifinal between ONGC and Hyderabad XI at the MAC B ground was suspended due to bad light.

Brief scores: Indian Airlines 175 in 65.2 overs (Yuvraj Singh 40, Shafiq Khan 39, Subhash Choudhary 33; Anand Yalvigi 5-71, Anand Katti 3-16).
