An evening of taal
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Aug 26: After what seemed like ages, the audience who religiously flock to the Punjab Kala Bhawan on Thursdays enjoyed classical instrumental music. The Bhawan's amphitheatre reverberated with the complex rhythms of the tabla, played impressively by Pawan Kumar Verma, the bald-headed player who is a constant accompanist to almost all the stalwarts of the music realm who visit the city.As usual the evening was arranged by the Punjab Sangeet Natak Academy and the North Zone Cultural Centre. Verma took the audience step by step, beginning with teen taal in normal tempo and then showing its development through some traditional compositions of his Patiala Gharana. So we went on a flight of fancy along with his chakradhar and uthan, that abstract conjuring up of imagery. Then in the true style of a tablachi, Pawan elaborated on thaat and taal by first singing the notes and then playing them on the tabla. To wind it up, Pawan demonstrated the rapid rela. He was accompanied by Mohan Malsiani on harmonium. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
