AMBALA, Aug 26: Henna, the 10-year-old, Class V student and daughter of Major P. Bakshi, who displayed immense courage in nabbing a thief who broke into their house at Staff Road, Ambala cantonment, was honored with the Bravery Award by the 2 corps GOC Lt Gen G.S. Sehota, at a function organized by the Army Wives Welfare Association at Kharga Auditorium here yesterday.The mental presence shown by the young girl not only saved her parents from theft of cash and ornaments, but also helped her father overpower the intruding burglar who had entered their first floor residence by scaling a sewerage pipe and removing a grill.
While the entire family was asleep, Henna woke up to the sound of the intruder closing her bedroom door. A composed Henna, with her presence of mind, pretended to be in fast asleep. Unable to trace the valuables, the thief left her room to enter the adjacent bedroom where her parents were sleeping.
The little girl quickly followed the thief and raised an alarm, thus waking her father who later overpowered the fleeing intruder and handed him over to the police. This was the third time the Major's house was broken into by a members of the same gang. During the last two thefts, cash worth Rs 6,000 and a briefcase containing screen documents were stolen. This was admitted by the thief during interrogation.
Police sources say with this arrest, a number of thefts and burglaries committed by the gang members in the Army area, are likely to be solved. Incidentally, Major Bakshi's residence is situated very close to the office-cum-residence of the Inspector General of Police, Ambala police range, that always remains under high security.
