Miscreants stone NCP man's house

PUNE, Aug 27: Elections for the three Lok Sabha seats and 18 Assembly constituencies in the district took an ugly turn when some miscreants indulged in hurling stones at the bungalow of Krishnarao Dhondiba Bhegde, official candidate of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), at Talegaon Dabhade on Mumbai-Pune highway.

According to a complaint lodged at Talegaon Dabhade police station, Krishnarao Dabhade's bungalow and car were damaged in the stone pelting on Wednesday afternoon. . The identities of the persons who indulged in the pelting could not be ascertained till late in the evening.

In a separate incident, a police complaint was filed against the Congress candidate from Bopodi assembly constituency Chandrakant Chhajed after he organised a public meeting at Khadki without obtaining the required prior permission.

Chhajed has been charged under the relevant sections of the Bombay Police Act, according to a report forwarded by the district collectorate to the Election Commission (EC).

Continuing its drive to detect unlicensed arms in the district, the police yesterday seized an unlicensed weapon. A total of 74 unlicensed weapons and 219 cartridges were seized in various parts of the district till last evening, the report said.

Owners of 25 licensed firearms deposited their weapons with the police on Wednesday. The number of licensed arms deposited with the police has reached 689, according to the report.

A total of 91 persons were detained by the police from various parts of he district as precautionary measures to ensure smooth conduct of the polls, officials from the district collectorate said.
