Sacred Heart break before title win

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, AUG 27: Sacred Heart, Santa Cruz, could have spared themselves the agony of going through the tie-breaker. They squandered chance after chance especially in the second-half but eventually scored a comfortable 4-2 tie-break victory over Our Lady of Health, Sahar, in the under-16 Division III final of the MSSA-Colgate Inter-School football tournament at the MSSA-Castrol ground, Azad Maidan, today.

Sacred Heart, coached by former Tata and India player Timothy Pereira, displayed good football sense and looked well-drilled and cool in the nail-biting tie-breaker after regulation time ended in a 1-1 score.

They were well-served by little right-winger Nigel D'Souza and captain Julian Franco in the forwardline. Big-made Ralph Afonso and dead-ball specialist Sebastian Fernandes were dominant in midfield and their defence was hardly tested seriously.

A defensive lapse by OLH goalkeeper Deepu Nair gave Sacred Heart the lead in the 16th minute. Nigel beat a defender and sent a goalmouth cross from theright. Goalkeeper Deepu failed to cut off the cross and left-winger Julian Franco tapped into goal at the far side of the post.

A somewhat similar mistake enabled OLH to restore parity in the 24th minute. Right-winger Ronald Denzil shot at goal after covering good ground and his goalbound shot was deflected into his own goal by Sacred Heart defender Aliston Joseph.

The second-half of the game was more of a tussle between the marauding Sacred Heart forwards and OLH goalkeeper Deepu Nair. The latter emerged the hero by frustating his opponents on umpteen occasions. But the Sacred Heart forwards Kunal N Advani and Julian Franco also muffed easy sitters.

Fed up with the bungling of the repeated chances by their forwards, the Sacred Heart midfield duo of Ralph Afonso and Sebastian Fernandes tried pot shots at the goal from a distance. But the tall OLH goalkeeper Deepu proved equal to the task. Once Ralph beat four defenders as he dribbled his way down the middle but shot meekly into Deepu's hand uponreaching the goal area.

Ralph, Sydney Fernandes and Nigel neatly converted their attempts, while Sebastian shot wide in the tie-breaker for Sacred Heart. Only Jayesh Swamy was successful for OLH.
