NEW DELHI, August 27: Reigning champions Hindu College in the men's section and St. Stephen's College in the women's section began their campaign in the 25th Nike-St Stephen's Basketball Championship on a rousing note at the college courts here today.Hindu defeated Kirori Mal 49-32 while St. Stephen's downed IP College 45-29 in what turned out to be one-sided games. In other league matches, St. Stephen's men defeated Zakir Husain College 60-41 and Lady Shri Ram College scrapped past a determined Shri Ram College of Commerce 28-26.
Hindu, though slow to start with, took control of the proceedings soon enough to send some panic waves in the opposition ranks. With ball-handler and sharp shooter Manav Walia in excellent nick and with support coming from rebound collector Manjeet Singh, Hindu ran up a quick lead within no time even as KM boys struggled to find their feet.
The KM boys, rusty as they were, made several errors and indulged in some desperate shooting despite some better screening and good passing made by the fleet-footed Tenzin. This allowed Hindu take liberty and shoot at will to take a lead of 27-15 at the break. On resumption, KM seemed to have lost out on steam even as they tried to put up a resistance.
In their anxiety to scoce quickly, they ran into trouble with seven team fouls which only helped the Hindu cause resulting in several free-thrrows. It's another matter that except for a few Hindu shooters, the rest failed to make most of the opportunity.
LSR surged into a lead of six points before SRCC could score their first basket. The former Welham girl Supriya Sehgal doing a great job with her quick passing and captain Nipun Tetle good at rebound collection, they brought the LSR lead down to be 11-18 at the half time. Once the match began, the LSR girls found it hard to score as their rivals threatened to take over the proceedings. Some excellent shooting by SRCC saw them close in on and with two minutes remaining on the clock, LSR was leading 28-26. But SRCC have to blame themselves for the misery brought on to them as they failed to basket a couple of free-throws and another chance soon after to the relief of LSR.
Earlier, St. Stephen's women and men ran through their opponents quickly with little resistance coming form their opponents. Their women, to begin with lagged behind against IP, but once they found their feet things became much easier as they led 22-16 at half time. Similarly, their men ran up an unassailable lead of 40-14 at breather and took the game light in the second to win comfortably.
