ISI plans subversive acts in State -- Govt

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, SEPT 2: Maharashtra Chief Secretary Arun Bongirwar and Additional Secretary for Home Department V Ranganathan claimed on Wednesday that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was planning subversive activities in four districts of the State, including Pune, during elections to the Lok Sabha and State Assembly.

Speaking to the reporters here, Bongirwar and Ranganathan said that the Government had intelligence reports about how the ISI might indulge in subversive activities in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Pune during the polls. State Electoral Commissioner D K Sankaran and Director General of Police Arvind Inamdar were also present.

Bongirwar and Ranganathan said election officials in these districts have already been put on alert and told to intensify security arrangements for the polls. Besides, reinforcements would be summoned from the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) and the Centre's Rapid Action Force (RAF) in these districts.

Earlier, Sankaran, Bongirwar, Ranganathan and Inamdar helda meeting with top police and election officials to review arrangements for the polls in Pune and Satara districts.

During the meeting, they directed the police officials to intensify security at the railway stations, railway bridges, road bridges and petrol terminals in the city and its vicinity. Police officials were also directed to monitor sale and use of explosives.

While pointing out that Pune and Baramati Lok Sabha constituencies were politically sensitive, Inamdar said that several high profile politicians were likely to address public meetings in Pune. He directed police officials to provide stringent security for these leaders.Congress has demanded re-negotiation of the Enron power project's first phase and keeping the second phase on hold until the new government is formed in the State
