MUMBAI, SEPT 2: Thane Collector and District Election Officer of Thane, Mukesh Khullar, has issued a show cause notice to high-profile Municipal Commissioner T S Chandrashekhar for breach of the model code of conduct in force for the upcoming parliamentary and Assembly elections.Following a complaint lodged by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Khullar has taken serious note of an official press note issued by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), which credits Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray with the completion of certain projects within a time-bound period. It also announces the launching of new projects in Thane city.
``If credit has indeed been given to the Shiv Sena in the official press release, it certainly violates the code of conduct and will attract the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951'' says a senior official of the state Election Commission. Under the provisions of the act, it is for the district election officer to take action in this case.
Since the municipalcommissioner is the statutory head of the corporation, it is he who has been issued a notice.
Meanwhile, Chief Electoral Officer D K Sankaran, accompanied by state Chief Secretary Arun Bongirwar, Director General of Police Arvind Inamdar and Additional Chief Secretary (Home) V Rangnathan will visit Thane on Friday to review arrangements for the election. ``The team will also take note of the official press note issued by the Thane Municipal Corporation.''
