FARIDKOT/NEW DELHI, SEPT 2: A motorcade of over two dozen vehicles sped down the tortuous and dusty roads of Faridkot yesterday where Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was campaigning. And the cavalcade accompanying Badal who was moving from one village to another in the Lambi segment of the Faridkot Lok Sabha constituency, was in gross violation of the Election Commission guidelines.Taking note of the photograph of Badal's convoy which appeared in The Indian Expres today, Chief Election Commissioner M S Gill issued strict instructions to the District Magistrate, Returning Officer and the police that the Chief Minister's convoy should stick to the limits prescribed by the Commission.
Since tomorrow is the last day of campaigning, the officials have been asked to be vigilant and ensure that the norms are not breached. The Commission's instructions allow each candidate to travel in a convoy of up to three vehicles only. Badal, who is in the Z-plus plus category, would be allowed to use his securityvehicles besides the number of cars prescribed by the EC. Election Commission officials clarified that supporters of the candidate have to maintain a 200-metre distance from the candidates' convoy. Normal vehicular traffic would also be permitted at such a distance.
While Express photographer Swadesh Talwar was taking photographs and noting down the numbers of the vehicles, angry workers tried to object with one of them trying to snatch the camera and the notebook from him.
