Bansal promises `A' class status for city

CHANDIGARH, Sept 2: Addressing a gathering assembled near the Sector 39 Government School here today Pawan Kumar Bansal, Congress candidate for the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat, described the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation as "a den of corruption" and vowed to stand by the people to resist the anti-people and anti-poor policies of the BJP and the MC and said that he would never allow the MC to tax the people.

Later, Bansal addressed road workers in Sector 19-D, Punjab University employees in Sector 14, staff of the Government Press in Sector 18, PGI employees in Sector 12 and a gathering at Janganana Bhavan in Sector 26. He said that UT staff assigned duties in the MC should be treated as being on deputation. He said that he would work to get "A Class" for the city which would mean an increase in employees' house rent allowance. He favoured a special quota for all categories of employees in all new housing schemes.

Later in the day, Bansal addressed two rallies in Sector 35. Accompanied by former Union minister Harmohan Dhawan, Bansal spoke at a meeting of the Chandigarh Hotels' Association. He also spoke to residents of sectors 34, 36 and 29. He told the Garhwal Sabha that if the Congress came to power at the Centre it "will not dither over the Uttarkhand issue. Workers of the Chandigarh Territorial Mahila Congress spent the day visiting labour colonies and some sectors.

AIEWA to support Cong candidate
Members of the All India Ex-servicemen Welfare Association (AIEWA) and their families have decided to vote for Congress candidate Pawan Kumar Bansal. A statement issued here said that a deputation of AIEWA met Bansal today and submitted a memorandum of demands, which include allotment of land for an ex-servicemen's club for personnel below officer rank as well as for cooperative house building societies, proportionate representation in welfare bodies and other cooperations and more promotional avenues for jawans.

Muslims, parents' body pledge support
Muslim Welfare Society today decided to extend support to Pawan Kumar Bansal. The society claimed that the Congress was the only secular party in the country. A statement issued here added that Bansal belongs to Chandigarh and can work for its cause better than an outsider.

The Chandigarh Parents' Association, has in a statement issued here, expressed support for Congress candidate Kumar Bansal.
