MUMBAI, SEPT 2: Twice in arrears, St Francis D'Assisi fought back gallantly to oust St Stanislaus 7-4 via the tie-breaker in the Ahmed Sailor Cup final of the MSSA-Colgate Inter-School tournament at the MSSA-Castrol ground, Azad Maidan, today. The hero of D'Assisi's triumph was Nishit Karkera. The linkman scored three goals, set up one and then brought off a grand save after replacing substitute goalkeeper Ishaq Qazi in the tie-breaker.
The two teams finished 3-3 after the regulation period. St Stanislaus were two goals up after the first nine minutes and maintained that advantage till the 38th minute.
D'Assisi, coached by former Tata and State player John Alphonso, negated that advantage after scoring two goals in the 39th and 41st minutes. Stanislaus once again forged ahead in the 43rd minute but D'Assisi not only restored parity soon after but also managed to score all their four tries in the tie-breaker, while Stanislaus netted only once from three attempts.
Yohann Pereira gave Stanislaus the leadin the third minute when his free-kick from just outside the box dipped into goal past a helpless D'Assisi goalkeeper Meshak Thimoty.
Another Stanislaus free-kick by Gavin Aguiar from the right beat goalkeeper Thimoty but rebounded off the crosspiece in the fifth minute. Stanislaus maintained the pressure and were two-up in the ninth minute when right-winger Delano D'Souza beat a defender and then placed past goalkeeper Thimoty who failed to challenge him.
Things hotted up in the second session when D'Assisi levelled terms within only two minutes. D'Assisi right-winger Aldrin Monteiro scored from an acute angle following a through pass by Karkera. Next, Karkera neatly beat Stanislaus goalkeeper Carl Mascarenhas with a well-placed low shot from the top of the box.
It was Stanislaus' turn to send their supporters into raptures when they made it 3-2 after just three minutes through a Gavin Aguiar header. But D'Assisi came roaring back and immediately neutralised the lead from a neatly taken free-kick byKarkera.
Stanislaus then took control and almost scored yet again. But fortunately for D'Assisi, Graden Murzello brought off a goalline save after their substitute goalkeeper Qazi was beaten by a Yohann attempt.
In the tie-breaker, Nishit Karkera, Savio Pereira, Rakesh Karekar and Aldrin Monteiro scored in that order for D'Assisi. Stanislaus netted their first attempt through Delano D'Souza. Their second shot was saved by Karkera, while Yohann's attempt crashed into the crosspiece.
International and former India coach Dereyk D'Souza was the chief guest and gave away the prizes.
