Ankita floors top seed Sania

CHENNAI, SEPT 2: It turned out to be a no contest in the under-16 boys quarter-finals as seeded players raced through to semi-finals. But fifth seed Ankita Bhambri of Delhi took the honours today, with a 6-2, 6-4 execution of top seed Sania Mirza in the under-14 girls' quarters of the Nutrine National Sub-Junior (Under-14 and 16) Hard Court Tennis Championship at the SAF Tennis Stadium here on Thursday.

Sania Mirza seems to have been `Bhambried' in the last two weeks. The younger Sanaa Bhambri nailed her in the previous tournament. The only consolation for Sania today was reaching the under-16 girls' semis, defeating Shereen Yusuf (Kar) 6-3, 6-2.

Top seed Chandrasekar Mohanty (Del) is yet to be tested as AR Anand Kumar (AP) fell apart 1-6, 0-6 in the under-16 boys' quarter-finals. In the other quarters, second seed Amanjot Singh (Chd) routed Arka Mandal (WB) 6-1, 6-1. Vinod K Sewa, third seed (WB), defeated Dhrub Kumar (WB) 6-4, 6-1. Sixth seed Rohan Gajjar (Mah) showed under-14 top seed Vikrant Sane isstill someway to go before he can match wits with them, drubbing him 6-2, 6-1.

For the second consecutive tournament, Isha Lakhani (Mah) reached the semi-finals of under-14 and 16 girls. Isha had it easy in the under-14 against Sharanya Pattabi (TN), winning 6-2, 7-5. She managed to put it across fourth seed Liza Periera (Mah) in a close match, prevailing 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3).

Top seed Megha Vakharia (Mah) and second seed Nandita Chandrasekar (TN) inched closer to a title showdown entering the semifinals of the under-16 girls. Megha downed Preethi Rao (TN) 6-4, 6-0 while Nandita overcame Ankita Bhambri 6-1, 7-6 (1).

The top three seeds in the under-14 boys, Vikrant Sane, R Arun Prakash (TN), V Vignesh advanced into the semifinals while fourth seed Chatwinder Singh (Chd) went down to Sujay Mahadevan (Mah) 5-7, 4-6.
