Mayur Mehta wins National Open Swimming

MUMBAI, September 2: Mumbai swimmer Mayur Mehta, a Std XI student of VG Vaze College of Commerce, added one more feather to his cap when he won the National Open long distance swimming championship in the river Bhagirathi (West Bengal) recently.

Representing Maharashtra, Mehta timed ten hours 43:57 minutes to win gold followed by Subir Sarkar of West Bengal, who clocked ten hours 53:30 minutes, and Juneid Bashir Khan of Nashik (11 hours 01:53 minutes) in the second and third places respectively. The 81-km race, the longest in the world, started at Farakka in Jangpiur and ended at Gora Bazar Ghat in Berhampore.

Sonal Phadke triumphs

Sonal Phadke of Sydenham College clinched the District Sports Association (DSO), Mumbai City, inter-school girls Under-19 tennis title, defeating college-mate Nikhila Palat 8-1 in the final.

Rekha Natarajan and Jitisha Shelarka (both Jaihind) will join thge two finalists in representing the Mumbai city team in the inter-district championship.

Boys (U-19): Amit Lakdawala (Jaihind) bt Vikram Nerurkar (Ruia) 8-2; (U-17): Imran Allana (Mary's ISC) bt Tarang Bhargava (Scottish) 8-6; (U-14): Ankit Ghaskadvi (Balmohan) bt Devang Shah (Mary's ISC) 8-3.

Girls (U-19): Sonal Phadke (Sydenham) bt Nikhila Palat (Sydenham) 8-1; (U-17): Dionne Appuhamyage (Convent of J&M) bt Gayatri Kerkar (JB Vachha) 8-2; (U-14): Gulrukh Mistry (JB Vachha) bt Sonal Kharade (Balmohan) 8-0.

Double for D'Assisi

St Francis D'Assisi notched an impressive double when they claimed the Under-14 and Under-17 titles in the Mumbai Division inter-school football tournament conducted by the Distict Sports Office (DSO), Department of Sports and Youth Welfare. After topping the Mumbai Suburbs district, Assisi beat Don Bosco, Matunga 1-0 in the U-17 final, and followed it up with a 5-0 drubbing of St Xavier's Fort in the U-14 final. Assisi had earlier won the division title in the Subroto Cup eliminations.

Results Boys (U-19): Mithibai bt Siddharth 1-0; (U-17):Francis D'Assisi bt Don Bosco 1-0; (U-14): Francis D'Assisi bt Xavier's, Fort 5-0. Girls (U-19): Andrew's, Bandra bt Khalsa 1-0.

RA Podar keep slate clean

RA Podar College, runners-up last year, kept a clean slate to emerge sole leaders of Group A after two rounds in the inter-collegiate chess competition at University Sports Pavilion today. Podar blanked SIES (ASC) 4-0 in the second round today to lead the table with 8 points. Ruparel, who defeated Jaihind 3.5-0.5, were placed second with 7.5.

Defending champions Mulund Commerce also scored a maximum four in the first round, over Ratnam College. They shared the lead in Group B with 13 other colleges.

Bengal Club nine-a-side football

Bengal club will conduct a nine-a-side instant football tournament for the JC Maitra Trophy on September 4-5. The quarter-finals will be held on Saturday as follows Western Rly vs Holiday Inn, Fr Agnel vs Central Rly, Dadar XI vs MS Police, Union Bank vs RCF. The semi-finals will be held on Sundaymorning, the finals on Sunday afternoon.
