Morcha by engineering students

Engineering students held a demonstration at the University of Mumbai's Fort campus today demanding changes in Allowed To Keep Term (ATKT) rules. The students were demanding an extension of a transitory ordinance UG/34, under which those with KT in the fourth semester could get admissions in the seventh semester, and those with KT in the second semester could get admissions in the fifth semester. Students could get admissions with any number of KTs.

According to Rahul Khedakar, National Students' Union of India office-bearer, students from engineering colleges all over Mumbai submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor.

Naik further remanded to custody

Gangster Ashwin Naik was today further remanded to police custody till September 17 in two cases of extortion by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Usha Iyer. Naik, through his henchmen, had allegedly demanded Rs 55 lakh from two builders in December '98 and early January this year. Naik's associate,Rajput, has also been remanded till September 17.

Ban cars beyond Haji Ali: Taximen

The Mumbai Taximens' Union's (MUT) managing committee has demanded that the entry of private cars be banned beyond Haji Ali towards south Mumbai to reduce traffic congestion and pollution. The committee warned the state government against protecting private car lobbies at the cost of taxi operators who live below the poverty line, and protested the fact that only taxis are being targetted in the drive to check the Pollution Under Control certificate.
