CHANDIGARH, Sept 3: The city police have recovered 19 boxes of liquor reportedly meant to be distributed among the residents of Kajheri village on the eve of Lok Sabha elections. Five persons have been arrested and cases under the Excise Act registered against them.Those arrested are Kajheri village resident Kesar Singh Tiwana, Sector 37 residents Arvind Kumar and Krishan Mahajan, Sector 22 resident Ram Niwas and Sector 44 resident Bhim Sen.
The Crime Branch Operation (CBO) Cell stopped a Maruti car at the light point of Sector 31. The car contained 10 boxes of Gold Star whisky. This led the police to a godown in the Industrial Area where a van was being loaded with liquor boxes. The police impounded the vehicle and seized nine boxes. The Excise officials, who were informed about the incident, reached the spot and sealed the godown.
Police sources said that car driver Kesar Singh revealed that liquor was to be taken to Kajheri village to be supplied among the residents by a political party. When contacted, CBO in-charge SSP Asad Farooqui, who supervised the operation, said that although their job was mainly to check anti-terrorist activities, he had specifically deployed men to check transport of liquor in view of the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.
