Parties prevented from `transporting' voters

PANCHKULA, Sept 3: The district administration has enforced strict prohibition on political parties transporting voters to polling booths. However, seven categories of persons will be allowed to use their vehicles on the polling day without any kind of permit from the district administration. District Election Officer-cum-DC Vivek Joshi specified the categories as follows: Private vehicles being used by the owners for their private use not connected with elections; Private vehicles used by owners either for themselves or for members of their family for going to the polling booth to exercise their franchise, but not going anywhere within a radius of 200 metres of a polling station; Taxis, auto-rikshaws, rickshaws etc for going to airports, railway stations, bus stands, hospitals or journeys which cannot be avoided; Private vehicles used by sick or disabled persons for their own use; Vehicles used by employees of government organisations, commercial establishments, shops, private/public industries, etc for commuting between home and workplace. Vehicles used by press persons having a valid pass/authority letter issued by the Election Commission of India or Chief Electoral Officer of Haryana or Press Information Bureau of India etc; Vehicles used for essential services namely hospital vans, ambulance, milk vans, water tankers, electricity emergency duty vans, police on duty, officers on election duty and public transport carriages like buses plying between fixed termini and on fixed routes and public transport carriages like bus and commercial vehicles.Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
