Cabbies threaten agitation

The Mumbai Taximen's Union is threatening a city-wide agitation if their demand of banning private commercial vehicles on South Mumbai roads is not met with. The union has requested the Western India Automobile Association (WIAA) which has over 2 lakh private motor vehicles under its banner, to get members to voluntarily withdraw their cars from South Mumbai roads, if it was `interested in bringing in discipline among taxi drivers', said Al Quadros, general secretary, Mumbai Taximen's Union.

Bollywood sets up anti-piracy cell

Bollywood has set up an All India anti-Film Piracy Cell to tackle satellite and cable piracy. The newly-formed cell will approach the External Affairs Ministry and ask it to stop the Maldives government from broadcasting newly-released Hindi films through its LTM television station at Male. The cell has been authorised by the film industry to take legal action against erring cable operators.

3 Chhota Rajan men held forextortion

Three hitmen of the Chhota Rajan gang, who are close associates of Yusuf Bachkana, were arrested for threatening Tardeo businessman Manish Jaiswal for extortion on Wednesday evening. The trio were arrested after Police Inspector Sunil Deshmukh, Sub-inspector Vilas Gangwane and Allad Gaikwad chased them down the narrow alleys of Malvani for more than a kilometre, until they were finally overpowered and handed over to Tardeo police in connection with the extortion case. Yusuf Suleman Kadri alias Yusuf Bachkana confessed during interrogation and disclosed the names of his associates, who have been identified as Salim Jabbar, Salam Sutriwalla and Nayeem Sheikh, all residents of Malvani. All of them have been arrested.

The gangsters told the police that they had spotted their target, businessmen Manish Jaiswal, from a photograph taken during the inauguration of a shop at Tardeo in June this year.The victim in his complaint to the police said that he had been receiving threatening calls fromMalaysia-based underworld don Chhota Rajan and his closed aide Rohit Verma since June. The gangsters were demanding Rs 1 crore as protection money.
