``The suspect was killed in a shootout between himself and members of the SANDF (South African National Defence Force),'' a police statement said.Five people, all white, were wounded, in the attack at 1 South African Infantry Battalion at the Tempe Military Base, the statement said.

``We are following up that (the racial) line of investigation, but we can't speculate on a motive at this point,'' police spokeswomen Johlene Van Der Merwe said.
